TRADITIONAL IMMIGRATION COUNTRIES

The traditional immigration countries, the United States, Canada, and Australia, together account for 66 million migrants, nearly one-quarter of the world’s total. Their overall migration profiles differ, but as you read above, they share three common source countries: China, India, and the Philippines. The number of migrants from these three source countries has been steadily increasing, while other sources have decreased in importance. Figure 5.11 shows the migration to each of these countries from its top sources. Several common trends are clear: migration occurs from around the geographic neighborhood—for example, from Mexico to the United States, and New Zealand to Australia; also, some migration is linked to cultural and political roots, such as the UK to Canada and Australia; and finally, migration from Asia has increased, especially from China and India, which are among the top sources for all three destinations.
